Maple Leaf and I put a few hundred miles on my truck this past trip all for another chance to make magic happen. This was the third trip with Maple Leaf this year. He’s caught on to the program and has adapted well to the early morning wake up calls and driving in the dark through crappy ass weather. In short, he’s made “The List”.
By mid-October you have to cover a lot of ground if you want to pick up just one more fish before you shut it down for the year. About 9 hours of usable daylight is all you have to work with and you use every bit of it. When you’re out there you have to believe that the next cast is going to be the one. It’s the fuel that keeps you out on the water, hiking the trails, wading the waters, and making the casts.
Sometimes 9 hours turns into a long hike and plenty of casting practice. That’s okay. It’s part of the experience. Sometimes everything falls into place and persistence pays off.
Maple Leaf told me before the trip he was quitting everything else and focusing just on fishing. I think this last trip just took him over the edge. He went 2 for 3 on this trip and I helped him land the biggest of the day.
Turns out Maple Leaf is great behind the lens. Me on the other…not so good.

It has been a few years since my brother and I shared the water together. Growing up we spent almost everyday fishing Cheney Lake and as we grew older we fished every weekend with the folks. We would spend the entire summer chasing chinooks, sockeyes, silvers, rainbows, and dollies.
I went away to school and then so did he. Different places but we always managed to meet back home in the summer to relive the good ol’ days. Sadly, those days are few and far between now. More miles than one can comfortably travel on a regular basis separate us now.
This week I booked a trip with Larimer Outfitters to fish some steelhead water this November. This will be my first ever guided trip. The best part is that my brother will be right there with me.
I finally got a chance to talk with Mr. Larimer on the phone. Very nice guy. Found out that he used to guide in Alaska and we’ve fished some of the same water. He ran through his program and gave me some advice on gear and flies.
For the next few weeks I’m busy gathering supplies and tying flies. I’m trying hard not to lose my mind in the process. The Wife is getting a little tired of hearing me go on and on about the trip. She just doesn’t understand the magnitude. I know some of you out there can read between the lines. This is big.
Five weeks and counting.
