I’ve managed to scrape together a few coins and have been contemplating making a purchase or two in the fly fishing department. May not be the wisest thing to do at this point in the economy but I figure if I’m going to pay for something it might as well be something that brings a smile to my face.
It seems to me that prices of high end fly fishing gear is getting a bit ridiculous even for me. A rod company’s high end single-hander is pushing $700 and a two-hander eclipsing $800. Mind you this is coming from someone who plunked down some serious coin for two-handers, one purchased each year for the past two. I paid full retail for those rods from my friendly, neighborhood fly shop. It’s likely that will be the end of that.
I’ve always wondered if the fishers listed as the “Pro Staff”, “Ambassadors”, or “Factory Team” would still use the same gear if they weren’t getting it for free. I’d like to think that they would because their reputation means more to them then just getting free stuff. I’d be interested to hear their take on the current fly fishing market and whether they agree with some of the prices listed in catalogs, in fly shops, and on the net. Maybe Congress can grill the Big 3 in fly fishing.

YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!
I’ve been a little more frugal about my choice of reels lately. I’ve been lucky enough to pick a couple up at discount prices. You gotta love those discontinued products. Sadly though these are few and far between. Most companies carry the product line for a while…the more popular it is, the longer the marketing lifespan. You can wait it out but it pays to be lucky.
Recently though I’ve been prowling the net in search of good deals. My first attempt at eBay was losing out to someone willing to pay a “Benjamin” more than me for an old school Sage 8136. I’m having a difficult time coming to grips with purchasing something used based on the sellers description of the item. Everything on the net is nearly new…lightly used…only lawn casted…used only 3 times…fished lightly…or some other variation of the “I’m trying to get top dollar for my gear” theme.
I’m taking the plunge into the flea market and hoping to come back with some real winners. I’ve got my sights set on a few choice items and a few Benjamins to help me seal the deal.
